33 people were injured Saturday night

33 people were injured Saturday night when an LIRR train derailed near New Hyde Park, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a press conference Sunday.

The collision happened when the passenger train collided with a work train which officials said “violated the clearance” of the passenger train track.

Seven workers and 26 passengers were injured. Four of those injuries are serious, Cuomo said.

One person has broken bones and underwent surgery yesterday.

Officials said the first three cars of a 12-car train derailed around 9:10 p.m. Saturday.

The train collided with a work train that is used for track maintenance, MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast said. Both were moving in the same direction and it was a “side-swiping type collision,” he said.
