Elon Musk Concerned About Battery Materials For Tesla

  • Tesla might enter the mining business as it seeks to ensure that it can make enough batteries for future vehicles, CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday.
  • As Tesla increases vehicle and battery production, it will have to consider parts of the battery supply chain, like mining.
  • “We might get into the mining business. I don’t know,” Musk said.

Tesla might enter the mining business as it seeks to ensure that it can make enough batteries for future vehicles, CEO Elon Musk said on Tuesday.
Musk said the electric-car maker’s ability to expand its product lineup depends on being able to produce a large number of batteries.

One of the key components of an Electric Vehicle Battery is the graphite anode.  Currently, graphite anodes are not manufactured in North America.  Further, there is only one operating graphite mine in North America which is the Imerys Carbon and Graphite Mine in Quebec.

"Lomiko has predicted that North American EV manufacturers will make a move into battery materials to assure supply chain security.", stated A. Paul Gill, CEO of Lomiko Metals.

Lomiko's La Loutre Graphite Project is located in Quebec just 53 kms from the Imerys Graphite Mine which is at the end of its mine life.  There is speculation that Imerys will enter the graphite anode business once a long term, cheap source of graphite is found.  Lomiko is one of the group's vying to become a source of graphite anode material for Tesla, Ford and other North American battery manufacturers.
